It’s 10:37pm and you’re asleep next to me in bed while I work. Well, right now I’m taking a break to write this because tomorrow when you wake up, you’ll be one year old.
One entire year of loving you immensely. More than my body ever knew was capable. And when I love, I love big, so that’s saying a lot.
When I was younger I never dreamed to be a mom. I thought maybe one day I’d adopt. I never thought I’d have biological children, but then you happened. I was terrified. I was excited. And I was really freakin nervous.
I was convinced you were going to come past your due date, but you surprised me by showing up a day early. I thought my anxiety would take over when I was in labor but it wasn’t until it was time to push where I felt like I couldn’t. But I did. And then you were born. And then you were placed on my chest. And I was a mom. Just like that.
After all the craziness and monitoring and visitors was over, I had a moment alone with you. I took this picture.
I sent it to my best friends. I told them about your dimples. And I promised you, I’d try my best.
Some days I look at you and wish you were that tiny little baby sleeping on my chest. Some days I’m amazed that you were ever that tiny and it’s honestly hard to remember you being that small.
And because of that, I want to remember every moment and milestone. So you’ll have to continue putting up with the endless cameras and phones in your face recording our lives. I think you might be thankful later. If not, I’ll help cover your therapy costs.
Quentin Michael, I can’t believe you’re one year old already. You won’t remember this past year, but I surely will never forget it. And like the creepiest Mariah Carey song, that I will for sure continue to sing to you, you’ll always be my baby.
To infinity and beyond baby boy.
